Theatre Unspeakable Presents: My Uncle Sam

Based on a true story, Theater Unspeakable's founder Marc Frost uncovers the truth about his own relative Sam Barton in the My Uncle Sam project. Born in Russia in 1891, Sami Silverstein joined a wave of turn-of-the-century immigrants who came to America seeking a better life. Growing up in Brooklyn, he took an interest in mechanics and became a test pilot during the early days of aviation. After a near-death experience, he returned to his love of building bicycles which eventually landed him on a vaudeville stage as Sam Barton of the Barton Bros. act. Marriage, family and an international career all come careening towards a spectacular yet tragic ending as he dies backstage at Radio City Music Hall in New York on the eve of World War II. This project has been underway since summer of 2019 and an early excerpt was previewed at the Victory Gardens Biograph Theater as part of the Alliance for Jewish Theatre annual conference.

Spring Youth Circus: The Distance

Long ago, the moon was very close to the earth, so close it missed knocking off peaks of mountains by an arm's length. You bet we went up there, of course we did, but not without danger. If you weren't careful, you could easily join the countless other jellyfish, seaweed, broken tv parts, roof shingles, assortments of mismatched socks, and the multitude of misfortunate creatures of all types who, pulled by the moon's gravity, would suddenly take flight. Some stuck to the moon's scabby surface, while others were held, suspended between earth and our celestial twin. And just the same, the gravity of our desire, our unrequited love- or so we feel- with no place to call home gets stuck, suspended in orbit, forever out of reach.
This is the story of that moon, that beautiful, mysterious, weighty orb, and the love caught in between.

“Recommended . . . a standout act by Amanda Crockett” – Chicago Reader

“Any of these circus numbers could be stand-alone entertainment. This family-friendly outing is fun and astonishing. To quote the little girl to my left, “Oh my gosh!” She repeated this phrase often.” – The Fourth Walsh

“what is happening is ambitious, adventurous, inventive and full of amazing flipping, climbing, swinging and tossing . . . The king, played by Amanda Crockett, is especially charming . . . the best moments of the show are the occasions when you seem to forget that you are watching a circus and simply see the stunts as moments in time of conquering an obstacle” – Third Coast Review

“a thrilling ride through the unconscious mind in pursuit of the truth . . . Any good circus show should teeter at the edge of chaos, and these actors gleefully oblige.” – Evanston Roundtable

“great fun and worth seeing! The hat juggling routine performed by pro Amanda Crockett is phenomenal! If you bring a child, prepare for them to ask if they can take class at the Actor’s Gym (which is a worthwhile endeavor!)” – Dadapalooza

“a really fun show with amazing circus performances . . . It was amazing and mind-boggling to watch . . . I think two person trapeze is amazing to watch because you see the cooperation they have to have with each other” – Ada Grey Reviews for You

“glued to the action, looking high and low, watching each move and where the performers might be next.” – Around the Town Chicago
