Advanced Gymnastics

Looking to really polish your skills? Stay after Gymnastics for the 30 minute advanced class to perfect your technique. Teacher permission required.

Circus and Performing Arts Camp

A day camp for young people offered in summer and winter, The Actors Gymnasium Circus and Performing Arts Camp is perfect for young performers who want to strengthen, stretch and flex their creative muscles. Each day begins with a warm-up, followed by training and workshops in circus, drama, and movement. Students learn circus and aerial skills: juggling, tumbling, trapeze, tight wire, stilts, and more; take fun-filled field trips; and create and perform their very own circus-theatre performance at the end of the session! Camp is directed by Sylvia Hernandez-DiStasi.
Ages: 9-15

Circus Arts

Level: Intro Circus, Beginning Circus, Adult Circus Arts 1
In this circus class, students gain an introduction to the Circus Arts, developing a basic skill set while increasing their strength and flexibility. Tumbling, aerial silks, lyra, trapeze, Spanish web, globe, juggling, stilt-walking, and tight wire are among the skills offered.

Level: Intermediate 1 Circus, Intermediate 2 Circus, Advanced Circus, Adult Circus Arts 2:
In this circus class, students develop their skills in Circus Arts while increasing their strength and flexibility. Tumbling, aerial silks, lyra, trapeze, Spanish web, globe, juggling, stilt-walking, and tight wire are among the skills offered.

Level: Junior Ensemble
Students work to master juggling, unicycling, back walkovers, splits, advanced skills in multiple aerial apparatus, and increased flexibility. An emphasis is put on collaboration and working well with others, following directions, demonstrating responsibility, and maturity. This is a performance preparation class, although performance is not a requirement.

Circus Arts for Students with Special Needs

Circus training provides children and adults the opportunity to explore their creativity, and build their confidence in a community of peers. Classes in circus arts can help foster the healthy physical, cognitive, and social development of individuals with disabilities.

Circus Fitness

This circus class is for students who wish to experience a new and exciting way to get in their best shape ever. This class will improve endurance, stamina, muscle tone, and overall strength, as well as teaching new motor skills. Circus fitness melds the best combination of a healthy body and an agile mind for each student’s individual level of fitness. Trapeze, Spanish web, and aerial silks are among the circus apparatus which will be used to give students an amazing workout.

Circus for Actors: Movement Audition Techniques

Students will develop skills they can use in audition and callback rooms, from tumbling and juggling to building strength, flexibility and control of their bodies. They will leave the class better prepared to take on any role and more confident in their ability to amaze in auditions.

Clowning

Through clowning, students are able to experiment with different personalities and personas, and also test social limits. Through a series of games and exercises, our instructors create an environment that is safe for taking creative and emotional risks. Students are encouraged to think on their toes in an area where the laughter of others is a reward, instead of a hurtful rebuke.
Ages 9-14

Contortion

For serious, aspiring contortionists or people who want a really good stretch. This extreme yoga class promotes flexibility, strength and healthy circulation.
Ages: 10 and up

Flexibility

Not as flexible as you want to be? Boost limberness, strength, and healthy circulation while you prevent injuries in this intro to contortion.
Ages: 16 and up

Gymnastics

Learn to tumble or just practice your skills in a multi-level class where everyone, beginning student to advanced, is welcome.
Ages: 10 and up

Imaginastics

This class focuses on gymnastics and tumbling and using those skills, explores theatrical expression. Each class begins with a warm-up and tumbling instruction. Students then read a story and act it out, using their bodies and new-found skills. This class is a great introduction to physical theatre.

Parent-Tot Gymnastics

In this gymnastics class, parent and child work and play together in a fun, safe, structured, class environment. Your child will develop strength, creativity, and self-esteem while learning new skills and having fun! Parents will also enhance flexibility and strength while spending quality time with their child. Children learn a new “trick of the week” at each meeting.
Ages: 2 to 3, and parents

Parkour and Art du Déplacement

Art du Déplacement and Parkour are disciplines in which practitioners use their bodies to interact with and traverse all types of environments while simultaneously focusing on mental and spiritual development. You will overcome physical and mental obstacles, face fears and discover creative and natural human movements in our classes. You’ll strengthen and condition yourself so that you can last in this healthy and positive lifestyle. Students will work together competition-free, never giving up and always improving.
Clothing: Most athletic shoes will work fine. Long pants are recommended.
NOTE: Check the weather and dress accordingly even if you are attending a gym class; even the indoor classes sometimes go outdoors. On rainy days, it may be a good idea to be prepared with a towel, just in case.

Physical Theatre

Move hard! Make bold choices! Celebrate whimsy! Learn to devise expressive performance using Clown, improvisation, and object partnering.

Silks

Silks is for students who took at least one aerial arts class at the Actors Gym and have received permission from their teacher to progress. Participants master wraps, drops, sequencing, and choreography and develop skills to perform more advanced aerial routines and techniques.

Single Weapon Certification in Broadsword

Learn to fight in the style seen in the Game of Thrones and Highlander tv series. Particular attention will be paid to proper partnering and acting the fight. This class will cover the basics of Broadsword stage combat including attacks, defenses, close quarters techniques and footwork. Participants will have the opportunity to take the Society of American Fight Directors skills
proficiency test.
Ages: 18 and up
Level: All

Single Weapon Certification in Knife Fighting for the Stage

This class will give students the chance to learn the oldest and most visceral weapon style. Attacks, defenses, footwork and performance skills unique to the performance of safe and effective theatrical knife play will be presented. Students will have the opportunity to take the Society of American Fight Directors skills proficiency test in knife at the end of this course.

Single Weapon Certification in Quarterstaff

Come take a class in the style of Quarterstaff as seen in Lord of the Rings, Xena: Warrior Princess and Mortal Kombat. This class will cover the basics of staged quarterstaff combat including attacks, defenses, footwork, and more. Particular attention will be paid to proper partnering and acting the fight. Participants will have the opportunity to take the Society of American Fight Directors skills proficiency test.

Single Weapon Certification in Rapier and Dagger

Come take a class in the style of sword play featured in Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, The Three Musketeers and Cyrano. Students will learn the basics of this theatrical style of double fence and have the opportunity to take the skills proficiency test for the Society of American Fight Directors.
Ages: 18 and up

Single Weapon Certification in Small Sword

Requiring a light touch and great precision this quick and beautiful weapon style is considered by many to be the pinnacle of European swordplay. This class will focus on the subtle blade play and footwork that make this weapon unique. Students will have the opportunity to take the Society of American Fight Directors skills proficiency test in small sword at the end of this course.

Single Weapon Certification in Sword and Shield

Learn to fight in the style seen in the Game of Thrones and Outlander tv series. Particular attention will be paid to proper partnering and acting the fight. This class will cover the basics of staged sword and shield combat including sword attacks, shield attacks, slashing attacks, binds, moulinets, parries and defense work. Participants will have the opportunity to take the Society of American Fight Directors skills proficiency test. Taught by SAFD president Chuck Coyl.

Single Weapon Certification in Unarmed Combat

This class will cover basic techniques needed to create a safe and effective fight for the stage. Students learn the basics of all aspects of unarmed stage combat, falling, grappling, punches, kicks, etc. Particular attention will be paid to the safeties required to perform fights as well as how to connect stage combat techniques to text, character and intention. The course will conclude with a skills proficiency test. Students that pass will receive a Society of American Fight Director’s certificate in Unarmed.

Summer Circus Intensive

The Actors Gymnasium Summer Circus Intensive is an innovative six-week intensive circus workshop dedicated to physical performance and act creation. We require students to have taken at least one class prior to this or have teacher permission. The program offers performers the chance to choreograph their own work and perform it in a showcase at the conclusion of the intensive. In this way, the Summer Circus Intensive fosters the creative and artistic development of the performers in addition to the development of technical skills. Each circus act in the showcase represents a variation on the chosen theme for the year.
Ages: 16 and up

Tumbling

From handstands and cartwheels to walkovers and handsprings. Perfect for kids who want to learn basic tumbling skills.
Ages: 6 to 12 years old

Youth Circus Program

The Actors Gymnasium Youth Circus is a performance-based training program taking place in fall and spring that culminates in a fully-produced, original circus show. This intensive experience includes high-quality training in drama, dance and circus arts skills – not to mention personal and interpersonal skills that are invaluable. The Youth Circus is one of our most popular ticketed events each year.
